地震のあった３月11日午後、私は妻と、
石巻市泉町の自宅にいた。

ひと仕事して、14時過ぎに昼食を取り、
いつもどおり休憩を兼ねて、外に散歩に出ようとしたら、
雪が降ってきたので、
「今日は外に出るのはやめておこうか…」と、
妻と話をしているところだった。

地震は、今まで経験したことがないくらい激しく、
妻は悲鳴をあげて食卓の下に逃げ込んだ。

ゆっさゆっさと大ぶりの揺れが続くので、
このままでは家が倒壊するのではないか、と思った。

やがて地震は去り、結局、家は倒れることなく、
外を見ると、隣の家の瓦屋根が壊れている。
庭の石灯籠が倒れている。

しかしそれ以外、近所に変わった様子はないので、
やれやれと、ひと安心していた。

すると、ほどなくして、防災無線のサイレンが鳴り、
緊迫した女性の声で、
「6メートルの津波が来る恐れがある」と、放送があった。

6メートルと言われても、ぴんと来ない。
ウチは高台にあるから、大丈夫だろう……と、呑気にかまえていたら、
隣に住んでいる父親が、血相を変えて飛び出してきて、
「山の上に避難する。おばあちゃんも連れて行くから、すぐに準備しろ!!」と、怒鳴った。

「避難なんて大げさな…」と思いながら、
あたふたと準備をして、車椅子の祖母と父母、妹と、私たち夫妻は、
雪が降るなか、歩いて日和山に登った。

そして、20分ほどで頂上の神社付近に着き、
眼下の街を眺めてみたら、たいへんなことになっていたのだ。

濁流に流される家。

爆発する工場。

燃える家。

一週間たった今だに、なんだか現実感がない。
