「ダイエーがダメになっていくなと感じたのは、中内社長がジュニア(中内潤氏)を本気で後継者に据えようとしたときですね。33歳にして副社長に就任させ、1989年にダイエーの次世代戦略店とされていた『ハイパーマート』の経営を全面的に任せた。経営経験に乏しい二世に大役を委ねたのは、自分の後継者としてふさわしい実績を作らせたかったからでしょう。

　そして二世に権限を集めるのを急ぎ、若い社員を抜擢して重要なポストにつけていった。二世に苦言を呈しそうな実績のある役員は遠ざけられ、そうしたベテランたちは次々と辞めていった。これで企業としての力は落ちると思いました」
