当時のアップルのファンたちは、アップル社がマッキントッシュを作る以前に出していた製品、AppleⅡの時代からのファンが多かった。 AppleⅡは、事実上、世界で初めてヒット商品となったパソコンで、とにかく凄いマシンだった。だから、当時、僕より少し年上で、これを触ることのできた幸運な連中は、みんなパソコンを作る、あるいはパソコンで何かを作るエンジニアに憧れた。ファンたちが一番憧れていたのはAppleⅡの設計をした天才、スティーブ・ウォズニアックだ。

ジョブズは、エンジニアではなかった。しかし、AppleⅡの成功の結果、そのジョブズのほうが、エンジニアのウォズニアックよりも金持ちになった。だから、当時の僕の周り、つまり、エンジニアに憧れる高校生たちの間では、ジョブズは、技術の分からない奴、口先だけで手柄を取り上げる奴、エンジニアをいいように使って金持ちになる汚い奴、だった。"
