ペン教授曰く、「店内の難解さは顧客の自律性を失わせ、服従させる。じらされた後には満足がやってくる。」つまり、店内で混乱した顧客は、砂漠で道に迷った旅人。苦労の末、眼前に現れた商品は、砂漠の中で見つけたオアシス。思わず手が出てしまう、と言うわけだ。

「IKEAで購買した商品の６０％は、当初のショッピング・リストになかったもの、すなわち、衝動買いしたもの」と言うデータが、この仮説を裏付けている。

もっとも、この効果自体はIKEAの発見ではなく、「グルーエン転移（”Gruen Transfer”）（注）」として、以前から知られていた。オーストリアの建築家、グルーエンは、店内レイアウトが混乱するものであるほど、顧客は当初の購買目的を忘れて衝動買いに走る、と言うことを発見している。IKEAはこの「グルーエン転移」を利用して、世界でダントツのファーニチャー・チェーンを築きあげたのだ。（余談だが、オーストラリアのABC1では、広告の背後にある科学と心理学をテーマにした”The Gruen Transfer”と言う番組が放送されているそうだ。）
